What is a Mini-Split System?

Essentially, Mini-Split systems are an energy efficient way to provide heating and cooling to any space. Mini-Split systems are either air conditioning only models, heat pumps, or cold climate hyper heat heat pumps in many configurations that provide both heating and cooling. In Mini-Split systems, a slim-line outdoor condenser unit connects through small piping to one or a variety of indoor units that sit nicely and almost unnoticed in the décor of any room. In order to provide cooling, the pump extracts heat from inside the home and transfers it outdoors. In order to provide heating, the pump extracts heat from outside the home and transfers it inside. Depending on the series, indoor units can be mounted on walls, ceilings, or recessed into walls and ceilings so they are hidden from view.

Unlike many conventional forced air systems that heat or cool an entire home or building to one temperature, Mini-Split systems are zoned systems. They allow users to set different zones in each home or building, each with its own preferred comfort settings. Varying interior units are categorized by zone, providing specified heating or cooling levels to each zone depending on that zone’s preferred settings. This means that two different rooms can be heated or cooled to different temperatures within the same home or building.
